More about Supported Housing Services
The Accommodation
Westminster Mind provides supported housing throughout Westminster for people with mental health problems. We run a variety of schemes including shared houses, shared flats and self contained single flats.
We work closely with the landlords and with our tenants to make sure that the properties, the furniture and the fittings are safe, secure and well maintained.
The properties are fully furnished and equipped and we work with all tenants to enable them to manage all aspects of having a tenancy including:
- Taking care of maintenance and repairs.
- Paying rents, service charges and household bills, establishing housing and welfare benefits where necessary.
- Living safely and peacefully in the accommodation and in the neighbourhood.
- Working towards becoming a fully independent and contributing member of the community.
The Support
Skilled, professional and friendly staff are responsible for the overall maintenance and good running of the properties and for ensuring that all people in our services who may have experienced loss, disruption and homelessness as a result of their mental ill health, are regularly supported and enabled to recover hope and achieve a satisfying and fulfilling life in the community.
This will usually include enabling tenants to:
- manage their mental, emotional and physical health
- look after their properties
- develop or re-connect with their own social networks, their families and friends
- maximise their income and manage their finances
- move on to their own permanent accommodation as active and contributing members of the community.
We work closely with statutory services, community mental health services, GPs, landlords and anyone who is involved with the tenant to ensure that support is co-ordinated and appropriate. We also work closely with specialised and mainstream services to enable tenants who are ready and able to do so to access education, training and employment.
However, we recognise that the journey of recovery is life long and different for everyone on it and we will provide long term and ongoing support for those people who continue to need it.
Staff usually meet with tenants twice a week although it can be more if someone is having difficulties or in crisis. Tenants meet regularly with their support workers to look at what they want to achieve from being in our services and develop a plan of action to attain it. This could include anything from helping to get a travel pass or learning how to cook, help with booking a holiday or taking driving lessons or moving into a self contained flat.
The service is funded by Westminster City Council under the Supporting People programme. All people coming into our services will be known to Westminster Community Mental Health Services and will usually be in the CPA.
